I got a job
September 8, 2026We moved from DFW to Atlanta in the heat of summer, August 2026. It only took 3 days, a chunk of savings, and a bloody slice of our heart to pull it off. Both my wife and I grew up in Texas where our family still lives along with our sweet church community. Alas, on August 2nd, we arrived at our new home in metro Atlanta. We pulled up in a UHaul and a Mazda, with a car-hauler and Golden Retriever in tow, but somewhere along the way, we managed to lose our only income.
We hit the ground running. Week 1 was dedicated to unpacking and completing a project for my previous employer, but soon enough, I could hear the cavernous echo coming from Week 2. So, as a chick leaps out of the nest, I posted on LinkedIn: Seeking 50 conversations with social entrepreneurs in 2 months. Flailing, falling, headed straight for the ground.
To my surprise, many, many people responded. Graciously, generously, strangers agreed to meet with me for coffee. This includes people that I was personally introduced to, people I reached out to cold, people that saw the post and reached out to me, and people I met in-person at events. Some days I would meet with two or three people at a time.
The conversations were always friendly, even if they began with, “So sorry, what are we meeting about again?” or ended with, “That’s a good story, but how can I actually help you?” As much as I love a good conversation, there came a time to be bold. Especially when I the sensed the weight in some of these introductions. Introductions are a loan of trust. Don’t mistake kindness for trust. I was getting the conversations, but what I needed was a job.
Week 3 rolls around. Aubrey and I are Door Dashing in the evenings. If it weren’t for the four consecutive meetings that ended with prayer or some spiritual encouragement, I don’t know if I would’ve been holding it together. Those meetings made someone as stubborn as me stop in my tracks and listen to what God wanted to say. Turns out, it was nothing. He just wanted me to stop and listen.
Week 4 begins. By Tuesday, I had two verbal job offers. By Friday, I had four offers — three in writing. It’s not a testament to networking, nor to luck surface area, nor to prayer necessarily. There is no recipe I would ever prescribe someone in a similar situation. All I know is that I was humbled. I didn’t realize how ripe my heart was for affirmation, affirmation from my Father in Heaven, affirmation that I’m not a complete phony. Imposter syndrome is real in your 20’s. Ask me in private and I’ll tell you the 5-year version.
God was clear about the job to take. I knew it in my heart, my wife probably knew it long before me, but we waited until we could wait no more. I will return with details, but tomorrow is my first day.
