An Inquiry into Creative Affirmations

February 3, 2025

Supposedly, this journey began without a destination. But, to be completely honest, we wouldn't have arrived at that Trailhead without a desire to discover my vocation. With many gaps to fill in, the driving question has always been: Is creativity your vocation? Or does your vocation merely involve creativity?

So far, one thing that has come from this journey is the maturing of ideas. When I write about a half-baked thought, if the writing is halfway decent, it cooks it through. Even if I don't like the final result or I disagree later on, writing forces me to get my current thoughts in order. Daily blogging helps me think critically about subjects I am interested in.

Stepping away from the metaphorical and into the particular, I would like to use writing as a tool to critique 20 affirmations about creativity. I hope to reinforce the good, and locate my beliefs.

Skeptical at first glance of this list, I am seeking the truth about creativity, and the goodness in creativity for all people at all times. For example, do the following claims of flourishing apply to everyone? If everyone does not have the same creative agency, do other peoples’ art have the same effect? What role does creativity play in society at large, especially when fear, confusion, and unrest are so prevalent?

Our working affirmations are:

  1. I am a channel for God's creativity, and my work comes to good.

  2. My dreams come from God and God has the power to accomplish them.

  3. As I create and listen, I will be led.

  4. Creativity is the Creator's will for me.

  5. My creativity heals myself and others.

  6. I am allowed to nurture my artist.

  7. Through the use of a few simple tools, my creativity will flourish.

  8. Through the use of my creativity, I serve God.

  9. My creativity always leads me to truth and love.

  10. My creativity leads me to forgiveness and self-forgiveness.

  11. There is a divine plan of goodness for me.

  12. There is a divine plan of goodness for my work.

  13. As I listen to the creator within, I am led.

  14. As I listen to my creativity I am led to my Creator.

  15. I am willing to create.

  16. I am willing to learn to let myself create.

  17. I am willing to let God create through me.

  18. I am willing to be of service through my creativity.

  19. I am willing to experience my creative energy.

  20. I am willing to use my creative talents.

As usual, I’m attending to the present moment and expectant for something to come of it.

That’s all I have time for this morning. More reflections to come.
