People are the Proximate

This piece is a continuation of my previous post and real-time sense-making.

I concluded with the idea of proximity and people. In that spirit, and at the opportunity for my wife and I to see humans other than each other, we attended a church small group. By 8:30 PM, the house was wall-to-wall with kids, young adults, and couples alike. I find myself listening to the charismatic discussion leader, surrounded by some 20 exceptionally kind strangers, wondering about my vocation. More specifically, how my creative and intellectual aspirations relate to the people I’m currently rubbing shoulders with.

Does my writing relate to the reality that Kayar experiences on a daily basis?

Would Jeremiah find my insights helpful in his actual life?

How can Trinity be encouraged to face tomorrow?

These people are my proximate.

Yes of course — work and life can be, and often are, completely separate. But I’m not talking about a job. I’m talking about love. Love that motivates me to write about anything, especially technology. There must be something on the other side. If my writing doesn’t strike the ground of reality at some point, it’s not enough to sustain my long-term commitment. People are the proximate.
