Pattern practice

We learn patterns like we learn language.

We don’t memorize, we feel. We intuit. We test. We repeat.

A baby muttering noises until they articulate words, suddenly the world responds according to the correct pattern. Rinse and repeat.

The same is true for writing or a creative practice. We ought not feel like we need to practice perfectly. We ought to ship work like a baby trying to talk until we discover our pattern.

Writing is unique in this way. Writing is a tool for understanding. We can mutter ideas that may not make sense or truths that may be false.

But the act of seeing and hearing and correcting our own patterns lead us to truth.
