Family Foundation

August 2026–present

AI is a formative technology. Formation happens over time, when practice turns into habit, and habit forms character.

Most of us bring this chat bot our unfinished judgements — what should I cook for dinner tonight, how do I paint with pastels. Many of those questions are harmless, like a Google Search. But they are not the only questions — how should I respond to this situation, why should I live, what should I do with my life. These are questions of formation. Before AI, these questions were answered by teachers, coaches, clergy.

Instead of trying to fix the rising skyscraper from the top down, this conversation begins at the bottom and answers something before AI ever enters the room. The answer is found in the type of person that you are becoming. When we outsource the practice of judgement to AI, even in the smallest of ways, we are abdicating our formation to AI.

The program is a 3-session, in-person experience for families:

  1. The Family Portrait — Origin, Praxis, Telos
  2. Family Practices — AI-assisted innovation bargain (Andy Crouch)
  3. Family Constitution — values sort, downloadable family.md

The companion app mirrors the physical sessions. Each module builds toward the family.md artifact — a one-page constitution the family writes itself and hands to its AI. The PDF is for the fridge; the Markdown is for the agent.
